Centre for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education

This is an African operation for Africans, with the aim of providing support and interaction to enrich Christians engaged in higher education whether in Christian institutions or public universities. Last year a very successful conference for East Africa was held in Nairobi, and this year a similar conference is planned for Southern Africa.

The Executive Director, Isaac Njaramba Mutua, and the offices are located in the town of Kitale, Kenya. In the interests of effective operation the members of the Executive Committee are also located there. The Governing Council is representative, as far a possible, of the various regions of sub-Saharan Africa.

As consultants to the Executive Director, our vision is that, rather than aspiring to imitate Western models, African Christian academics will forge a new pathway to a genuine, life-affirming pattern of authentic development. As the Kenyan academic, B. Wanjala Kerre, said 20 years ago:

"The Good life"

"While Africa cannot isolate herself from the rest of modem civilizations, it is quite obvious that modem cultural values which have been borrowed from the West can no longer promise humanity a balanced and humane lifestyle. Our modern cultures are endemic to the very values that the world so much desires. These are values which in most respects were African. Inherent in this domain of good life are such strong values as family, individual and social responsibilities, respect for human life, love for children, sharing etc. The good life in the African context will therefore, be one where beside access to food, shelter, clothing and medical care, the individual will have cultivated a balanced.view of self in his moral, spiritual and intellectual dimensions of life."

Community Penetration Christian Ministry

Goal

To help Christians fully appreciate God in Christ by establishing ministries that are focused on bridging the gap between Christian scholarship and the community of believers so that this community in turn may penetrate the contemporary society effectively with the salt of the Gospel.

Mission

This is an active Kenyan operation based in Kitale that endeavours to put into practice the saying of our Lord in Matthew 5.16 "...let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven."

Objects

  1. Co-ordinate, facilitate and organise community training programmes geared for making Christ fully known as the ultimate source of meaning.
  2. Establish healthy working relationships with different churches, Christian organisations, institutions and groups from different gatherings in order to bridge the current gap between the academic community and the non-academic community together with the gap between Christian community in theological disciplines and the Christian community from other academic disciplines.
  3. Facilitate, encourage and stimulate interest in reading and community education amongst Christians in order to eradicate illiteracy and particularly Christian illiteracy by all possible means.
  4. Facilitate the implementation of strategies for the constructive involvement of the Christian community as change agents for good the salt and light of the world -- in society and specifically in identified social groups.
  5. Conduct and collaborate in workshops, seminars and conferences that are in harmony with the vision and purpose of the organization.
  6. Organise, facilitate and participate in research on African realities.
  7. Be involved in an apologetic ministry of Christianity, in humility and love, in order to clear distorted views of Christ and Christian faith.
  8. Engage in such other activities, consistent with the philosophy of the organisation, as may contribute to the achievement of the mission.
